My favorite Book, Article, TEDTalk, and PodCast (BATP) all around dealing with your Gremlins – those fake creatures talking negatively about yourself or your professional experience.
Monday marked my two-year anniversary leaving my corporate gig for my own Engaged Pursuit. My mission – to solve the professional engagement crisis through thoughtful (and hyper-personal) career planning. Since starting my company, I’ve impacted hundreds of individuals and organizations throughout the country. It’s feels great.
And this is just the beginning…
Building a business from scratch is mind-blowing. It’s fun and scary and exciting and interesting and freaky and insane all at the same time. Bottom line – it’s really hard. I’ve had my share of Gremlins over the past 24-months, so writing about “Heathy Mind=Healthy Career” has been super cathartic for me throughout October and early November. We all deal with negative self-talk (especially if you’re on your own Engaged Pursuit) and it’s important to know how to deal with the Gremlins when they start making an appearance.
To wrap-up this topic, I’d like to share with you my favorite Book, Article, TEDTalk and PodCast (BATP) all around Healthy Mind=Healthy Career.
Book: The Gifts of Imperfection, by Brene Brown. One of my all-time favorites, this classic highlights the fact (and gift) that we are all imperfect. How to shift your mind-set from “This sucks” to “This is Awesome.” It’s an easy “before-bed” read that really inspired me when I found myself in a funk.
Article: Four Steps to Quickly Kill Off Negative Self-Talk, by JT O’Donnell (INC Magazine). You know me – I love INC Magazine for its simplicity and insightful content. Author JT O’Donnell also left her corporate gig to become a Career Coach and she has some super interesting ways to fend-off those Gremlins when they come knocking. This is practical advice that I found really useful!
TEDTalk: Want to be happy? Be grateful, from David Steindl-Rast. This TEDTalk has almost 6 million views and focused on what we all want – to be happy. His assumption? Happiness comes from one thing – gratitude. As described on the website, this talk is “an inspiring lesson in slowing down, looking where you’re going, and above all, being grateful.” Check it out!
PodCast: Why Saying is Believing – The Science of Self-Talk, by Laura Starecheski (NPR). This isn’t your typical Stewart Smalley (Saturday Night Live) approach! This PodCast highlights the importance of telling your TRUTHFUL story to yourself and not let your inner Gremlins take-over. A great listen on your way to work or getting ready for an important meeting (or interview)!
Your homework this week: You know the drill – take a read, listen, or view around this important topic of “Healthy Mind=Healthy Career.” You’ll have some extra time next week with Thanksgiving (hopefully) so enjoy!
Coming-up for the rest of the year: For the rest of 2017, I’ll be focusing on success stories throughout the year. Of course, I’ll keep it totally anonymous, but I thought it would be cool to highlight some of the individual and organizational wins this year. You can think of this like multiple Case Studies meant to inspire you (or someone close to you) as you think about your Engaged Pursuit.
Here’s to your Engaged Pursuit!
