Your September (Work/Life Balance) Resources – BATP

My favorite Book, Article, TEDTalk, and PodCast (BATP) focusing on the important topic of achieving Work/Life Balance.

With the summer coming to a close and school back in session, I spent September writing about Work/Life Balance. Schedules are suddenly tight, traffic has increased and balance seems like a distant memory.  My take – Work/Life Balance is something that is achievable; however, it’s up to the individual to define, track, modify and measure. Organizations don’t give a professional (or team) Work/Life Balance – individuals need to create it for themselves (and spread the love) in order to be successful.

Want additional help? I’m glad you asked! Here’s additional resources to help you on your Engaged Pursuit to Work/Life Balance!

My favorite Book, Article, TEDTalk, and PodCast (BATP) related to the topic of Work/Life Balance.

Book: “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” by Mindy Kaling.  I think this former “The Office” alum is hysterical. Now on her own Hulu show, Kaling will instantly make your life better through this super funny book. Her style is light, her language is colorful, and it’s a great way to take your mind off work (and get you to relax).  I think it’s important to include some light reading in your library, and this is a perfect fit!

Article: “How to Stay Focused When You’re Working from Home by The Harvard Business Review.  If working from home is one way you achieve Work/Life Balance, it’s still important to stay productive, focused, and results-orientated (at least while you’re on the clock).  I’ve really struggled with this in the past, and this smart article highlights the best ways to stay on-track while you’re working in your PJs.

TEDTalk: “Why You Should Define Your Fears Instead of Your Goals” by Tim Ferriss.  I’ve found that clients focus on Work/Life Balance because they are really trying to stay focused on achieving their goals – they want nothing to get in their way.  In this TEDTalk, Ferriss, author of “The Four-Hour Work Week,” talks about how you should turn that around and make a list of your fears instead of your goals to maximize productivity.  Super interesting spin to stay on-top of your game!

PodCast: “Stuff Mom Never Told You: Unbalancing Work/Life Balance” by LeanIn.org. This PodCast if from a few years ago and starts with the hypothesis that Work/Life Balance doesn’t really exist (I don’t necessarily agree with this).  I do think this is an interesting take on Work/Life Balance and I think it’s good to look at both sides of a topic impacting so many professionals.  Take a listen!

Your homework this week: Pause the latest episode of “This is Us” (best show on television by the way) and get focused on these resources above!  Start with some laughs reading Kaling’s book and then get serious with the rest of the resources highlighted above!

Coming-up later this week:  It’s officially October and I’m focusing on “Healthy Mind=Healthy Career” all month!  Later this week, I’ll write about the importance of INTENTION as you think about your professional journey. Check your inbox Thursday or Friday!

Here’s to your Engaged Pursuit!
